Boer War prisoners arrive

June 28, 1901 - The first contingent of Boer War prisoners arrived aboard the SS Armenian and were transferred to internment camps set up at Darrell’s and Burt Island. Over the next 18 months, Bermuda would receive more than 4,000 Boer War POWs.

Margaret Carter and
Dame Lois Browne-Evans

Handicapped rights activist Margaret Carter (June 1, 1939-December 27, 1992) and Dame Lois Browne-Evans (June 1, 1927-May 28, 2007)—who is being honoured for the third year in a row on National Heroes Day—share the same birthday. The women—both of them known for their outspokenness—had different backgrounds and life experiences, but were bond by a mutual concern for the disadvantaged and powerless.
Carter was founder of the Bermuda Physically Handicapped Association and Dame Lois’ accomplishments include being Bermuda’s first female lawyer and a long-time Opposition Leader.

Honour for King Trott

Congo player Freeman “King” Trott, whose career in hotels and clubs spans 50 years, was this month inducted into the musicians’ union’s Hall of Fame on St. John’s Road, Pembroke. [more ...]
